Walker Evans

Walker Evan's was born on November 3, 1903 in St. Louis Missouri. As a child Evan's showed interest in painting and photography, taking picture of his family with a small Kodak camera. Later he went to Williams Collage but soon dropped out and moved to New York. He enjoyed reading and writing so he would take jobs in book stores and the public library where he could constantly read. Evan's moved to Paris, France for about a year then moved back to New York and became a writer while also taking up photography. Evan's early photo's were influenced by the European style of photography because of his year in Paris. In 1936 Evan's took time out of work to go to down south on a trip with his friend James Agee, who was writing an article on three family's in Alabama and Evan's was the photographer.  Though Agee's article was not published by Fortune Magazine, Evan's photos where portrait as "representations of the Great Depression." Evan's photo collection of American Photographs was put up in the Museum of Modern Art but his other photographs weren't published till around 1938-1941 where Houghton Mifflin showed some of his Subway pictures i his book Many are Called. From between 1934-1965 Fortune magazine  had around 400 photos and 45  articles of Evan's. He also contributed to Luxe magazine and Special Photographic editor between 1945-1965. Evans died April 10, 1975.

Photo's by Paul Strand

These three are my favorite Paul strand photos. I like the first one because it shows how he used the light to create designs and make the photo interesting.
I like the second one because the boys face is very detailed and i feel like i can look into his eyes and feel what hes feeling. I feel like this picture is about emotion and seeing past the physical appearance.
I like the third one the best because unlike the second one, you cant really "see into the soul." I think the thing I like the most about the picture is the sign around her neck that says blind. It descries the picture but doesn't take over the focus of the picture which is the blind woman. I really like these pictures taken by Paul Strand.

Short Biography of Paul Strand

Paul Strand was born on October 16, 1890 in New York. He became interested in photography after being inspired by Alfred Stieglitz's 291 gallery. (later on some of Strands work was added to the 291 gallery) In 1915 he was introduced to "straight photography" by discovering what a large-format camera can do. Unlike the photographers of that time and age who took soft focus pictures, Paul Strand took sharply focused photo's of New York try to capture the life and energy the people and culture. Around 1920-1930 Strand worked on films while still being an active photographer. Around 1950 Strand left America for political reasons and went to Europe and spent weeks at a time traveling and photographing Northern Italy, the Outer Hebrides (Islands located off the northwest of Scotland), France and in the 1960's went to Africa and Egypt to capture the people of north and west Africa. He then spent the remainder of his life in Orgeval, France. Paul Strand died March 31, 1976. Strand left his mark on history and becoming one of the best photographers  throughout the 1900's and to this day.

One of my Favorite Photographers: Nigel Barker

Light Walk Thoughts

When going on a light showed me the differences between light. That might sound strange but here is what I mean. The is many different types of lighting. There is room lighting, natural lighting, florescent lighting, low lighting and very little to no light. Each type of light can make the same picture look completely different. For example I found that room lighting can make objects look more orange or yellow, while natural lighting tends to show the true color and gives the image brightness. The light walk let me see how different lighting can effect a picture, and how the angle of the light can make the image look different based on where it hits the object. The light walk showed me how the lighting can effect the quality and result of the image.

Why I'm in Photo 1 and Bad Photo thoughts

Why am I in Photography? I think it's because I love looking at images and pictures. They explain things than no words can, and they represent more about a person then you think. Pictures can describe how you feel and who you are as a person. They show more about a persons character than you would think. So I find my self drawn to pictures and that's why I'm taking Photo 1. But I learned that taking pictures and looking at pictures are two very different things.
When I was doing the bad photo project, It was very hard to take actual "bad photo's". The camera always took nice pictures so taking the perfect bad picture was difficult. I would constantly have to change the lighting because it was hard to get blurred and shaken pictures. It made me realize that you had to work harder to get the bad photos than the good photo's. But doing this project also made me realize and appreciate photography and photographers.  I liked the project though I didn't like using Photoshop because I had a lot of problems with it and dint really understand how to use it. Other than that I like the Bad Photo Project. (Bad photo's will be updated later)
